Access to Justice in Rural Areas

During 2006, the Instituto de Defensa Legal deepened its efforts to comprehensively reflect on and address one of the most important problems affecting the 54.8% of Peruvians in the lowest economic and social bracket (in rural and low-income urban areas): access to justice. One of the most important aspects of this approach has been the recognition of the insufficient state response to satisfying this right to the resolution of legally relevant disputes. Various reasons explain why very little progress has been made in this regard from the different public bodies, with the few initiatives concentrating on increasing jurisdictional units, which has proven nearly impossible to achieve due to the lack of financial resources.
