Velasco's triumphal entry into Cusco
General EP Juan Velasco Alvarado, President of the Republic, greets the people during a visit to Cusco. In 1968, Velasco overthrew the constitutional president Fernando Belaunde and inaugurated the first phase of a military regime (1968–1975) during which profound changes were made to the country's social and economic structures and which, in its early years, enjoyed broad popular support.
