RETABLO, VENTURA CCALAMAQUI

Ventura Ccalamaqui Year: 1978 Dimensions: Open: 40 x 91 x 21 cm / Closed: 40 x 46 x 21 cm Around the 1970s, the Jiménez family began producing historical works, in addition to their customary and religious ones. Ventura Ccalamaqui was a woman from a village near Ayacucho who, in the context of Independence, fought against the royalists, who defended the Spanish Crown. In the retablo we see, on the left, the uniformed royalists equipped with firearms. Toward the right comes Ventura leading a large group of women who, armed with sticks and other bladed weapons, are prepared to fight for the liberation of their sons and relatives, who had been imprisoned by the royalists. One can see a character representing the Church on their side, a priest with a bible in his hand who would have acted as an intermediary. In the background we can see the barracks of Santa Catalina and neighboring houses beneath a daytime sky. The exterior and interior of the doors are decorated with traditional floral ornaments in colors on a white background.
