RETABLO. INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS HUMANITARIAN WORK
Humanitarian Work of the International Red Cross. Year: 1985. Dimensions: Open: 58 x 66 x 21 cm / Closed: 58 x 32 x 21 cm. Upon the arrival of the International Red Cross in Ayacucho in 1984, Edilberto Jiménez developed a relationship with its members and collaborators. This connection allowed him to appreciate the humanitarian work they carried out and, through his admiration for their work, he found motivation to continue his own work creating retablos. The retablo depicts the humanitarian work of the International Red Cross during difficult times for Ayacucho. Inside both doors the Red Cross logo is drawn on a white background. On the left side of the box, a violent clash with firearms and bladed weapons is depicted, involving various groups such as the military, civil forces, Shining Path members, innocent children, etc. In this section the sky has turned red and both the Peruvian flag and the Shining Path flag are flying. Amidst it all, Red Cross members carry out their work, attending to the wounded and distributing blankets and other items to the population. They carry a large flag, and above them the sky has a light blue tone. The sky seems to reflect a kind of variable disposition toward the events taking place on the ground, expressed through colors. Toward the right we see a prison, where Red Cross members help the wounded to recover.
