Women at the Anfasep headquarters in Ayacucho
Women at the Anfasep offices in Ayacucho. In a dramatic struggle to learn the fate of their missing relatives and to denounce those responsible for their disappearances, wives, mothers, and sisters of victims of violence made pilgrimages to barracks, state institutions, and media outlets. Confronted with the ineffectiveness of their individual efforts, on September 2, 1983, a group of Ayacuchan women founded the Asociación Nacional de Familiares de Secuestrados, Detenidos y Desaparecidos del Perú (ANFASEP). By the end of that year, the association had reported 600 cases.
