OPERATION CHAVÍN DE HUÁNTAR
Operation "Chavín de Huántar." On April 22, 1997, nearly four months after the takeover of the Japanese Ambassador's residence, an elite Army commando unit stormed the building, freed 72 hostages, and killed all the MRTA hostage-takers, including Néstor Cerpa Cartolini. Also killed were Supreme Court Justice Carlos Giusti, Army Commander Juan Valer Sandoval, and Army Lieutenant Raúl Jiménez Chávez.
