THE PRESS NOW BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE
Under the belief that controlling the press could reverse the erosion of support for the military government, in 1974 General EP Juan Velasco Alvarado expropriated the main media outlets. These came under State control, though they were formally assigned to different social and productive sectors.
