Increased mortality of political and municipal authorities

1989 recorded the highest death toll of political and municipal authorities in the conflict with approximately 500 assassinations.

1989 was the year with the highest number of deaths of authorities and elected representatives in the entire conflict. It registered 68% of political authorities and 71% of municipal authorities assassinated in the entire decade. Approximately 53 provincial and district mayors were assassinated that year (33% of the total between 1980-1995), of which 45% were from the Aprista Party. In total, some 500 municipal and political authorities were assassinated. Seventeen justices of the peace were also killed, approximately 40% of all those killed between 1982 and 1995.
