Sexual violations in Uchiza

In 1989, in Uchiza (Tocache, San Martin), women were systematically raped by military personnel. The testimonies include accounts from both victims and perpetrators that confirm these abuses in the context of counter-subversive operations.

In 1989, in the district of Uchiza, province of Tocache, department of San Martin, there were multiple cases of rape perpetrated by members of the Peruvian Army. A witness who served in the army told how soldiers forced a detained teacher to "be affectionate" with them, taking advantage of the nighttime curfew. Another testimony of a perpetrator describes the existence of a dungeon near a soccer field next to the military base, where these abuses were committed. The testimonies show a systematic pattern of sexual violence against women detained in the context of counter-subversive operations in the Alto Huallaga area.
