During 1989, the Capaya Military Base in Abancay was the scene of numerous systematic rapes. A witness who was detained at the base witnessed mass rapes occurring at night, where soldiers in the towers demanded to participate in the rapes. The victims were mainly peasant women who were brought to the barracks up to twice a day or night. The day after the rapes, the women's bodies were left lying with their legs open, some upside down, in a semi-dead or motionless state. One witness managed to escape from the barracks with the help of a peasant who gave him his daughter for fear that she would be raped and killed by the soldiers, as had happened to her cousins.
