Sexual violations in Capaya
Massive and systematic sexual violations committed by soldiers of the Capaya Military Base against peasant women during 1989. The rapes occurred during the night and often resulted in the death of the victims.
In 1989, at the Capaya Military Base in Abancay, there were numerous systematic rapes against peasant women. A witness who was detained at the base witnessed mass rapes that took place during the night, where soldiers, including those in the watchtowers, demanded to participate in the rapes. The victims were mostly peasant women who came up to twice a day or night to the barracks. The day after the rapes, the women's bodies were left lying motionless, with their legs open, some turned over, half-dead or dead. One witness recounts that when he fled from the Capaya barracks he was helped by a peasant who asked him to take his daughter with him because they were afraid of the soldiers who raped and murdered the women, as had happened to his cousins.
