Murder of Raul Santiago

Raul Santiago, leader of Izquierda Unida in Independencia, was assassinated by the PCP-Sendero Luminoso in 1989. His death was part of the Shining Path's strategy to eliminate neighborhood and political leaders in the Northern Zone of Lima.

Raul Santiago was a leader of the United Left (IU) in the district of Independencia who was assassinated by the PCP-Sendero Luminoso in 1989. His assassination was part of a Shining Path strategy to attack neighborhood leaders and leftist politicians in the Northern Zone of Metropolitan Lima. This crime took place in the context of an intensification of selective assassinations by the PCP-SL against leaders of different political tendencies, including both APRA and leftist militants. Santiago's murder occurred in the same year that Elías Corcuera, another IU leader in San Martín de Porres, was also assassinated.
