In 1989, subversives raided the town of Santo Tomás de Pata, where they killed 25 peasants. This attack was part of a series of violent incursions in the area, including the town of Chupacc where 30 peasants were killed. The zone was under the administration of the political-military command, in the third attempt by the Armed Forces to consolidate the Rondas committees. These attacks occurred in a context of intensified violence in the province of Acobamba, where the Shining Path victimized both civilians and authorities on charges of collaborating with the Forces of Order.
