Central region as the scene of the conflict

Between 1989 and 1991, the department of Junín in the central region became one of the main scenarios of the internal armed conflict. This period marked the national expansion of the conflict and the second highest peak in fatalities.

Between 1989 and 1991, the central region, especially the department of Junín, became another of the main scenarios of the Peruvian internal armed conflict. This period marked the expansion of the conflict into new territories, acquiring a more national character after being concentrated mainly in Ayacucho. The year 1989 represented the second highest peak of fatalities of the conflict, after 1984. During these years, the conflict expanded to more and more parts of the country, with an increase both in the number of dead and disappeared and in the number of localities affected.
