Seizure of Pilluana by MRTA

In 1989, the MRTA took the town of Pilluana in San Martin as part of an offensive that included the capture of other towns such as Shapaja, San Jose de Sisa, Peleje, Papalaya and Pacaypasa.

In 1989, the MRTA began a new offensive in San Martin that included the seizure of several towns. Among the towns taken were Pilluana, Shapaja, San Jose de Sisa, Peleje, Papalaya and Pacaypasa. This offensive was part of a broader MRTA strategy to expand its presence in the San Martin region. MRTA's actions in this area took place in a context of territorial dispute with the Shining Path PCP and links with drug trafficking in the region.
