In 1989, there were confrontations between the PCP-Sendero Luminoso and organized peasants from the communities of Chupaca and Santo Tomás de Paca. These confrontations left twenty-five community members dead in Santo Tomás de Paca. The confrontations occurred in the context of peasant resistance against the control and demands of the PCP-SL in the central region of the country. This event is part of the cycle of violence that characterized the high Andean areas of Junin during the period of expansion and subsequent retreat of the Shining Path.
