Clashes in Chupaca

Clashes between the PCP-Sendero Luminoso and organized peasants in the communities of Chupaca and Santo Tomás de Paca left thirty and twenty-five community members dead respectively in 1989.

In 1989, violent confrontations took place between the PCP-Sendero Luminoso and organized peasants from the communities of Chupaca and Santo Tomás de Paca in the department of Junín. These confrontations resulted in thirty community members dead in Chupaca and twenty-five community members dead in Santo Tomás de Paca. The confrontations occurred in the context of peasant resistance against the control and actions of the PCP-SL in the high Andean zones of Junín, particularly in the areas of Canipaco and Cunas, which entered a situation of war during this period.
