On December 25, 1988, Shining Path dynamited three towers of the cable rail system that transported minerals from San Cristobal to Marh Túnel, both production units of Centromín Perú in La Oroya. This attack was part of a series of terrorist actions against mining infrastructure in the central region of Peru. The attack occurred in the context of an escalation of violence against mining facilities during 1988, a year in which other significant attacks against Centromín Perú also occurred. One day later, on December 26, SL continued its attacks by dynamiting Centromín Perú's compressor house in Morococha.
