In the early morning of December 25, 1988, three towers of the cable rail system that transported tungsten from San Cristobal to Marth Túnel were dynamited. This attack was part of a series of attacks against Centromín Perú's facilities that occurred during the last days of December 1988. The attacks took place in the context of a mining labor conflict and after the rumor of an armed strike in La Oroya, which in the end did not take place. This action was part of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso's strategy to attack mining infrastructure in the central region of the country.
