Creation of the National Police of Peru (PNP)

Creation of the Peruvian National Police by unifying the three police forces

Law 24949 was enacted, which modified the related articles of the Political Constitution of Peru and created the National Police of Peru (PNP), culminating the reorganization process of the FFPP. The National Police would assume the organization and functions of the FFPP (Civil Guard, Investigation Police and Republican Guard), with all their rights and obligations. PNP Lieutenant General Octavio Herrera Polo was appointed as the first Director General of the PNP. However, neither the law nor subsequent provisions showed any significant changes in the organizational structure or performance of the FFPP.
