On November 30, 1988, after several altercations, the new National Directive Committee (CDN) of Izquierda Unida (IU) was finally installed under the presidency of Senator Jorge del Prado Chávez. This event took place in the context of the I National Congress of IU that had been held on January 20 of that year, where a statutory modification was approved by which the CDN would have a collegiate presentation of eight members. The installation of the new CDN marked an important moment in the internal reorganization of the left-wing party.
