Formation of the Federation of Mining, Metallurgical, and Steel Workers of Peru
In 1984, the labor organization in the mining sector of Peru achieved a significant milestone by unifying its bases with the incorporation of steelworkers into its federation. This led to the creation of the Federation of Mining, Metallurgical, and Steel Workers of Peru (FNTMMSP), which represented around 65,000 workers across various scales of mining operations. The political influence within these unions was significant, with the PAP party playing a crucial role in shaping the direction of the federation.
En 1984, la organización laboral minera logró un hito importante con la unificación de sus bases al incorporarse a su federación los trabajadores siderúrgicos. Se creó la Federación Nacional de Trabajadores Mineros, Metalúrgicos y Siderúrgicos del Perú (FNTMMSP). En ese momento existían alrededor de 200 sindicatos mineros, de los cuales 54 pertenecían a la gran minería, noventa a la mediana minería y cincuenta a la pequeña minería, agrupando en total aproximadamente 65,000 trabajadores. Posteriormente, en 1985, dirigentes mineros apristas dividieron la FNTMMSP y formaron la FETIMMAP el 17 de agosto, reconocida el 23 de diciembre del mismo año.
