Minister of Economy Abel Salinas Eyzaguirre announces a second set of economic adjustment measures. These measures come in the context of a serious economic crisis, after the same minister had announced in September the government's decision to initiate contacts with international financial organizations and Peru's return to the IMF and the World Bank. The economic measures generated protests from political parties, trade unions and business organizations, including a "march of empty pots" which was repressed by the police. The year 1988 would close with an accumulated inflation of 1,722%.
