On November 7, 1988, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso attacked the San Ildefonso Prison in the city of Abancay, capital of the department of Apurimac. This attack was an attempt to repeat the successful assault on the Ayacucho prison carried out in 1982. The attack took place in a context of increased violence in Apurímac, where the authorities of the Peruvian Aprista Party had become the focus of Shining Path attacks. This period was characterized by a substantial increase in the number of peasants killed, takeovers and interventions in communities, attacks on police posts and sabotage of infrastructure in the provinces of Aymaraes, Cotabambas, Grau and, to a lesser degree, Antabamba and Abancay.
