Murder of Alejandro Patiño

Alejandro Patiño, former leader of the Morococha Mine Workers Union and an APRA militant, was assassinated by Shining Path on October 17, 1988. The assassination occurred in the context of his public opposition to the start of a second national mining strike.

Alejandro Patiño, former leader of the Morococha Mine Workers Union (STMM) and an APRA militant, was assassinated by the PCP-Sendero Luminoso on October 17, 1988. This assassination took place in the context of important mobilizations and strikes of mining workers demanding the recognition of the single national miners' list proposed by the National Federation of Mining, Metallurgical and Iron and Steel Workers of Peru (FNTMMSP). The PCP-SL assassinated Patiño and other former mining leaders who had publicly opposed the start of a second national strike. One day after Patiño's assassination, on October 18, 1988, Fidencio Coronel, former leader of the La Oroya Metalworkers Union and PCP Unidad militant, was assassinated the day after the national strike began.
