National strike of October 1988

National strike called by the CGTP on October 13, 1988 in response to the severe economic crisis, the 114% hyperinflation and the fall of real wages to the 1985 level. It was one of several strikes held that year in a context of recession and loss of purchasing power.

On October 13, 1988, a national strike was called in the context of a serious economic crisis affecting the country. This strike was one of several carried out during 1988, a year in which the monetary devaluation accelerated, generating higher inflation and a fall in workers' real income. In September of that year, economic measures had been applied which brought inflation to 114% and caused real wages to return to the 1985 level, losing all the gains of the previous two years. The CGTP (General Confederation of Peruvian Workers) was the organizer of this and other national strikes during that year. The strike took place in a context of recession, loss of purchasing power and hyperinflation, factors that paradoxically influenced the formation of a conservative attitude in the labor sector, contrary to the expectations of union leaders.
