In October 1988, a subversive column entered the town of Puyhuan and killed 15 villagers. This event occurred in the context of intensifying violence in the province of Acobamba, where Shining Path had been committing systematic murders against the civilian population since 1984. The attack was part of a series of violent incursions against communities in the area, including the previous murder of 11 peasants in Cuticsa in June of the same year. These attacks occurred at a time when the Armed Forces had established military bases in the region and peasant patrols were being formed to resist subversion.
