Second armed strike against municipal elections

Three-day armed strike called by the PCP-Sendero Luminoso through the MRDP between September 27 and 29, 1988 to boycott the municipal elections. It was part of a strategy of armed strikes implemented by the PCP-SL between 1988 and 1992.

The PCP-Sendero Luminoso called a second armed strike through the Popular Revolutionary Democratic Movement (MRDP) on September 27, 28 and 29, 1988, with the specific objective of boycotting the municipal elections scheduled for that month. This armed strike was part of an ascending sequence of actions that the PCP-SL implemented between 1988 and 1992 to increase its presence in the capital and other areas of the country. The call sought to prevent citizen participation in the municipal electoral process by means of threats and forceful actions. The strike was part of the PCP-SL's strategy of using armed strikes as a mechanism of political pressure and demonstration of power, although according to the report, these calls did not achieve the objectives desired by their promoters.
