On September 22, 1988, a march of empty pots was held in Lima as a popular protest against the economic measures announced by the government. This demonstration was part of a series of protests that arose after Minister Abel Salinas Eyzaguirre announced new economic measures on September 8. The march was repressed by the police. Days earlier there had been major food shortages, which generated strong public protests throughout the country.
