Publication of the Century Interview with Abimael Guzman
El Diario published the Interview of the Century with Abimael Guzmán, his main media appearance before his capture.
On July 24, 1988, the newspaper El Diario, mouthpiece of the PCP-SL, published the self-styled Interview of the Century with Abimael Guzmán. The interview was illustrated with old photos and an apparently recent one with a background of vegetation to mislead the reader. Guzmán opted for the written press format instead of audiovisual media, trusting that his statements would be reproduced by other media. This was his main media appearance prior to his capture.
