National mining strike held on July 21, 1988 with a blockade of the central highway, during which the National Police assassinated Mrs. Francisca Quispe, leader of the demonstrations and wife of a mine worker.

On July 21, 1988, a national mining strike was held with the participation of the great majority of the mining workers, who blocked the central highway. During this demonstration there was a confrontation between members of the National Police and a small group of mothers who had joined the strike. The situation worsened when an excited police officer shot at point-blank range Mrs. Francisca Quispe, wife of a worker of the private mining company Austria Duvaz, who was known for her courage and leadership in the marches and demonstrations. After the murder, the police accused some demonstrators of being subversives, who, together with the corpse, were taken to the Marcavalle military base.
