On July 7, 1988, eight members of a selective commando of the MRTA (Movimiento Revolucionario Túpac Amaru) kidnapped General Enrique López Albújar in Lima. This kidnapping was part of the MRTA's actions during the period of transition to the siege of the city (1985-1988), when the subversive groups intensified their operations in the capital. General López Albújar was a high-ranking military officer, and his kidnapping represented an action of high political impact on the part of the MRTA. This event occurred in the context of growing violence in Lima, where both the PCP-SL and the MRTA were disputing political and military spaces in the city.
