UMOPAR patrol ambushed in Alto Huallaga
PCP-SL ambush of UMOPAR patrol in Alto Huallaga that resulted in the death of seven policemen and the prosecutor of Leoncio Prado, increasing the subversive prestige among coca growers.
During July 1988, the Shining Path PCP carried out an ambush against a patrol of the Mobile Rural Patrol Unit (UMOPAR) in the Alto Huallaga area. Seven policemen and the prosecutor of Leoncio Prado were killed in the attack. This action, together with the murder of homosexuals and prostitutes in Aucayacu, helped to increase the prestige of the PCP-SL among the coca growers in the region. The harassment of the forces of law and order allowed greater freedom to the illegal coca economy in the area.
