Cotabambas declared in emergency

Cotabambas was declared in a state of emergency on June 13, 1988, the first province in the southern Andean region to receive this measure to counteract the control of the Shining Path PCP, which had formed Popular Committees in the area.

On June 13, 1988, the province of Cotabambas was declared in a state of emergency, becoming the first province in the southern Andean region to receive this declaration. This measure was intended to counteract the control that the Shining Path PCP had managed to establish in the area through the creation of Popular Committees. The declaration of emergency implied the entry of military forces to confront the subversive presence that had advanced in this province located on the border with Cuzco. Subsequently, in 1988, the Army installed up to 13 counter-subversive bases in the area, although it was not until the following year that it achieved the support of the population and the constitution of Self-Defense Committees.
