Murder of Sonia Muñoz in Loayza Hospital

Sonia Muñoz de Yangali was tortured and shot by the military in May 1988 in Huancavelica. Two months later, on June 1, 1988, she was shot to death in the Loayza hospital in Lima where she was recovering from the first attack.

Sonia Muñoz de Yangali was kidnapped and tortured by the military on May 18, 1988 in the province of Churcampa, Huancavelica. The military shot her in the head and, believing her dead, placed a poster with alleged slogans of PCP-SL members on her. Two months after the failed assassination attempt, on June 1, 1988, she was shot to death in the Loayza hospital in Lima, where she was hospitalized recovering from the wounds suffered in the first attack. This case represents an example of the systematic violence exercised by State agents during the internal armed conflict.
