In June 1988, in the area of Cuticsa, province of Angaraes, a column of Shining Path members disguised as soldiers entered the town and killed 11 peasants. This attack occurred after two years of relative tranquility in the area, when the Shining Path restarted their actions taking advantage of the withdrawal of the Santo Tomas de Pata Military Base. The event was part of a new offensive by the PCP-SL in the province of Angaraes during 1988, which also included other similar attacks in nearby villages.
