On May 18, 1988, in the province of Churcampa, Huancavelica, Sonia Muñoz de Yangali was kidnapped and tortured by the military. The perpetrators shot her in the head, believing her dead. Subsequently, they placed a poster with supposed slogans of PCP-SL members on her, apparently to simulate that she had been a victim of the Shining Path. Two months later, on June 1, while she was hospitalized in Loayza hospital after surviving the first assassination attempt, she was shot to death in the same hospital.
