Presentation of the first national mining claim form

For the first time in history, the FNTMMSP presented a national list of demands to the State and mining companies, seeking to negotiate benefits for all workers in the sector. The erratic government response led to the radicalization of the protests.

On May 18, 1988, for the first time in the history of Peruvian mining unionism, the National Federation of Mining, Metallurgical and Iron and Steel Workers of Peru (FNTMMSP) presented a national list of demands to the State and the employers. This presentation took place after the federation held its First Unitary Congress in August 1987. The list of demands sought to negotiate a set of benefits for all mining workers in the country. The government's response was erratic and contradictory, which prompted the radicalization of the protest measures. The mining companies, through their spokespersons, argued that workers were paid high levels of remuneration and that they should focus on improving productivity and efficiency.
