Massacre in Cayara

Massacre perpetrated by the Peruvian Army in Cayara, Ayacucho, which left 25 men dead. Rape was committed during the events, with at least one survivor testifying.

On May 14, 1988, a massacre took place in Cayara, Ayacucho, perpetrated by the Peruvian Army. During the military incursion 25 men were killed. Testimonies collected by the CVR indicate that during the massacre sexual violations were committed against women. One woman who was raped during these events managed to survive and later testified about what happened. This case is part of a documented pattern of sexual violence committed by armed forces during massacres in rural communities.
