Ambush in Erusco

PCP-Sendero Luminoso ambush against a military convoy in Erusco, near Cayara, resulting in the death of a captain, two corporals and a sergeant of the Peruvian army on May 13, 1988.

On May 13, 1988, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso ambushed a military convoy in Erusco, near Cayara. Four members of the armed forces were killed in the attack: a captain, two corporals and a sergeant. This attack took place in the context of a new offensive by the PCP-SL in search of 'strategic balance' between 1988 and 1990. The response of the armed forces to this type of attack was still the same as it had been five years before the army's entry, as those in charge of the military bases still considered that the population was actively supporting the Shining Path columns.
