On May 13, 1988, in retaliation for a Shining Path PCP column ambushing an Army convoy in the vicinity of the community, a law enforcement patrol raided Cayara. Law enforcement forces gathered the population in the community and killed 28 peasants in cold blood. This was one of the most notorious cases of an attack on a civilian village in the region during this period.
