Ambush and massacre in Cayara

Following a PCP-SL ambush on a military convoy on May 13, 1988, law enforcement forces extrajudicially executed 28 peasants in the community of Cayara, Victor Fajardo.

On May 13, 1988, a column of the Shining Path PCP ambushed an army convoy in the vicinity of the community of Cayara. In retaliation for this attack, a law enforcement patrol raided the community of Cayara, gathered the population in the plaza and killed 28 peasants in cold blood. This case was one of the most notorious attacks on a civilian village in the South Central region during this period of the internal armed conflict.
