On May 10, 1988, the PCP-SL dynamited the Civil Guard post in Araqueda, Cachachi district, Cajabamba province. This attack was part of a series of violent actions by the PCP-SL in the Araqueda area, where multiple executions of authorities and villagers were also carried out. The Araqueda area was the scene of intense Shining Path activity during this period, including the murder of Victorino Mora Villanueva, evangelical brother Cirilo Ponce and other villagers. The attack on the police post represented an escalation in the armed actions of the PCP-SL against the forces of law and order in the province of Cajabamba.
