On May 5, 1988, the Shining Path PCP carried out a ferocious attack on the police post of Crucero, in the province of Sandia, department of Puno. This attack came after almost a year of calm in the area. During the raid, the subversives killed six members of the security forces and the local justice of the peace. This attack marked the violent reappearance of the PCP-SL in the region after a period of relative tranquility.
