MRTA attack on Pichanaki police post

About 30 armed MRTA men attacked the Pichanaki police post in March 1989. Days later, the subversives marched into the Junin highlands to join up with another detachment.

In March 1989, around 30 armed MRTA men attacked the Pichanaki police post in Chanchamayo province. This attack was part of the MRTA's operations in the central jungle during its period of expansion in the area. A few days after this attack, the subversives marched into the Junin highlands to join the MRTA highland detachment, composed of 37 militants, with the intention of taking Tarma in April. This event is framed in the context of the intensification of MRTA actions in the provinces of Chanchamayo and Oxapampa during 1988-1989.
