On February 24, 1988, militants of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso attacked the 10th Police Command located in the city of Huancavelica. This attack was part of a series of large-scale military actions carried out by the PCP-SL during 1988, when the subversive organization had managed to recompose and reorganize its forces, recovering the military initiative in the last phase of the 'Great Plan to Develop Support Bases'. The attack resulted in the death of two policemen. This action was preceded by an ambush on February 18 in Lachocc, Acobambilla, where nine military personnel and two civilians were killed, and was followed by another ambush in September of the same year in Chonta, Laria.
