On February 10, 1988, PCP-SL militants launched a wave of simultaneous dynamite attacks against multiple targets in the city of Huancayo. Targets attacked included the Departmental Directorate of Junin, the Savings Bank, the District Council of El Tambo, the Superior Court of Justice, the Junin Development Corporation, the Bank of the Andes, the Pacifico movie theater and the Hidalgo Transportation Company. This coordinated attack was part of the escalation of violence that characterized the 1987-1992 period in the Mantaro Valley. The attacks occurred after the subversives knocked down several high-tension towers, causing a power outage that left numerous towns along the Mantaro River without electricity.
