Creation of FREDEMO (Democratic Front)

Creation of the political alliance FREDEMO between Acción Popular, Partido Popular Cristiano and Movimiento Libertad, led by Belaunde Terry, Bedoya Reyes and Vargas Llosa respectively. This coalition of right-wing and center-right parties was formed in opposition to the Aprista government of Alan Garcia.

On January 29, 1988, Fernando Belaunde Terry (leader of Acción Popular), Luis Bedoya Reyes (leader of the Partido Popular Cristiano) and Mario Vargas Llosa (leader of the Movimiento Libertad) laid the foundations for the constitution of the Frente Democrático (FREDEMO). This political alliance brought together AP, PPC and Movimiento Libertad in a common front of opposition to the APRA government. FREDEMO was officially constituted on April 14, 1989, when its leaders signed the bases of a common government plan.
