Confrontation in Plaza Dos de Mayo

A group of 40 hikers attacked demonstrators in the Plaza Dos de Mayo during a national strike of the CGTP, attempting to attack Senator Jorge del Prado of Izquierda Unida on January 28, 1988.

During a national strike called by the CGTP, a group of approximately 40 hikers violently confronted demonstrators in the middle of Plaza Dos de Mayo. The objective of the attack was to attack Jorge del Prado, senator and leader of the United Left. This confrontation occurred in the context of the peace days that were being promoted in Lima, including the proposal of Mayor Jorge del Castillo to institute 1988 as the Year of National Peace. The incident was evidence of the PCP-SL's strategy of direct confrontation with the legal left and its leaders.
