During the national strike called by the CGTP on January 28, 1988, hooded members of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso infiltrated the march that was taking place in the Dos de Mayo square. Their objective was to try to dynamite the CGTP premises and assassinate the leader of the Communist Party of Peru, Jorge del Prado. The attempt unleashed a shootout in the place that ended with the flight of the provocateurs. This action was part of the PCP-SL's strategy to force the radicalization of the protest measures, isolate the leaders of the trade union center and achieve progress in its attempt to lead the trade union movement in the capital.
